The Book Trader
The Book Trader is in the heart of Philadelphia’s Old City. Located on 2nd Street, it is only a block away from Elfreth’s Alley, a cobblestone street with 18th century houses that are still occupied by residents. Independence Hall, The Liberty Bell, and Penn’s Landing are also close by, giving the area its notorious historic charm.
Philadelphia, "the city of brotherly love,” is also a place where history lives and breathes on the streets. As I drove alongside the river, past the stone architecture of the bridges, and the kayakers and beautiful victorian style homes, I felt the togetherness of a place bound by history.
It is a confident city, sure of its identity and nonconforming to the modern digital world. I loved this about it. It is appreciative and aware of the past but also malleable to the present, bringing together a host of persons from all over the world. I experienced the city through walking the streets in 100 degree weather with 100% humidity, intermittently dipping into a museum or bookstore.
It is a book city. There are multiple bookstores around the city and are adored by locals and tourists alike.
The Book Trader is a used bookstore with a lot of character. From the white molding to the art hanging above the shelves, this place is not your ordinary find. The disorder, the books falling over and stacked all around, are what make this bookshop an iconic Philly landmark.
The Book Trader is celebrating their 40th anniversary this year.
